Beyond the list of standard restoration steps detailed on the main page, here are some added notes for this unit :

I bought this locally with some noise issues noted.  Exterior condition was very good.

The Pioneer SX “3 series” (SX434, SX535, etc) were sold from 1974 to 1976 are arguably the high point in Pioneer receiver build quality.  The SX939 and SX1010 were top-of-the-line for this series and favorites of many collectors.  While the “50” and “80” series that followed competed on power and distortion specs, cost-cutting is apparent.  The SX650 and the “80” series also used STK power packs which I make a point avoiding.

The SX434 is a modest yet solidly build receiver with a nice tuner and phono stage.  Given most folks have fairly efficient speakers needing only 2 or 3 watts to get rather loud, its 15 WPC amplifier section will not disappoint.  Finally, there many that prefer the sound of  the simpler low end amplifiers to the higher power family members.  “The most important watt is the first one” (because that is the watt you will actually listen to 99% of the time).

Initial inspection of this example showed this was lightly used with a very clean interior.   The power cord had some insulation cuts, so I installed a replacement.  

After cleaning all the pots and switches, I powered it up and found normal issues with dead lamps.  I replaced the dial and meter lamps with “cool white” LEDs to bring out the original blue dial lettering.  The unit was otherwise fully functional and sounding nice

The recap process was uneventful.  I used Nichicon GoldTunes for the main amplifier caps.  I did not “up-cap” these to avoid higher inrush currents stressing the power/speaker select switch. 

Pioneer did use several “replace on sight” signal transistors with low noise equivalents installed per AudioKarma recommendations.  

The tuner was aligned and now provides a very full FM stereo sound.

Final functional testing complete/passed.  Sounds very nice, indeed.

The cosmetics came out “very good” with a small scratch in the faceplate under the function knob and a gouge in the cabinet top near the back (see last 2 photos),
